Sustainable Information Technology in Tertiary Education
This is now a legacy site for the 2008-9 strategic review of green IT in UK further and higher education which was commissioned by JISC, and conducted by HEEPI. The IT work continues under the SusteIT 'brand' with new JISC-funded HEEPI projects on greening scientific computing and videoconferencing, and involvement in the EAUC energy and carbon improvement initiative in London, Yorkshire and Scotland. See www.goodcampus.org for full details.
SusteIT reflects the increasing importance of ICT-related energy and environmental issues, in the sector and elsewhere. It builds on the previous work of the HEFCE-funded Higher Education Environmental Performance Improvemement Initiative (HEEPI) within the sector, and that of SustainIT, an independent charity, outside it. The two partners are running a project for the JISC on Sustainable IT in Universities and Colleges.
There are now a number of outputs available including the main report, and supplementary technical papers on computing, data centres, printing and the survey results. These can be downloaded from the news or publication sections.
There are also a number of completed case studies showcasing best practice from universities and colleges in Britain, which can be downloaded from the cases section.
There are also two excel tools - one to help estimate the energy and carbon footprint of an institution's ICT, and one to compare the costs and carbon emissions from thick versus thin clients. These can be downloaded from the tools section.
Presentations from previous SusteIT events can be found in the archive section of the events section.
